STAR GOLF PREVIEW: Wells Fargo Championship with BLUE HORSESHOE

Another example last week of where ‘Cashmere Keith Mitchell’ gets into a winning position again only to fall over his feet come the weekend. That guy is seriously starting to vex me, writes BLUE HORSESHOE.

Fortunately, he’s not at Quail Hollow this week, where he has played well before. The clear course horse is teeing it up for the Wells Fargo Championship, however. A certain Rory McIlroy has won this tournament three times and has only finished outside the top ten twice in his last nine starts here since 2012. Those are some impressive course conversion stats in anyone’s language. As expected, he is the firm favourite to win again in Charlotte, North Carolina.

It helps that Scottie Scheffler isn’t at Quail Hollow for the signature event, as he is expecting the birth of his first child. But let’s see if we can’t uncover a few others with some more attractive odds at what is regarded as one the more testing tracks of the regular season.

Blue Horseshoe Loves:

Sam Burns – Currently ? with

Quail Hollow has its share of long holes. Eight of the par fours measure between 450 and 510 yards. Three of the par threes are also over 175 yards. That makes for a load of long irons over the four rounds. Burns not only has enough length to get it out there off the tees, but he also sits inside the top ten of scoring averages in par 4’s of this distance. Burns has the long game to cope with Quail Hollow. He’s also an outstanding putter on his day. To me, Burns represents the best each way value this week in my book.

Viktor Hovland – Currently ? with

After being crowned the Fedex Cup Champion in 2023 it has been tumbleweed for Hovland in 2024. That being said, his class is not up for debate, and he clearly likes it around here. Hovland sits firmly in the top ten players of strokes gained at Quail Hollow in the last ten years. He also resides in the top ten of players in proximity from over 175 yards out. I think Hovland is well placed to go well at Quail Hollow again and looks a decent price at ? .

Adam Svensson – Currently ? with

This is a signature event which means a small, select field. Svensson has his chance to be here as a winner from last season. The Canadian has been a frustrating follow this year. He gets into promising positions, only to blot his copybook with a messy round. One thing I’ve noticed about Svensson though is that he tends to go well at the longer, harder layouts. I think he’s better than the rank outsider price tag he’s been given. He’s an attractive each way play for all you exotic lovers out there.

Lee Hodges – Currently ? with

I think we can classify it as a sickness by now.
