STAR PREVEW: Slovenia v England
[dropcap]R[/dropcap]ooneyless and Rudderless – the new way forward for England?
Caretaker manager Gareth Southgate has dropped England’s record goalscorer Wayne Rooney to the bench tonight for the qualifier against Slovenia and given Man U have done the same to him in their last three games, time could be running out for the Roon at the top level.
I say ‘top level’ with a degree of irony as England, yet again, looked a long way short of the top level with another thoroughly unconvincing performance against Malta at Wembley. The fact they couldn’t score in the second half was a depressing advertisement for their current lack of cohesion.
Despite Slovenia losing to England in all four of their previous encounters they may well fancy their chances of getting something from tonight’s game in Ljubljana.
Slovenia’s opening two qualifiers resulted in a 2-2 draw against Lithuania and a 1-0 over Slovakia boosting their chances of a top two finish in the Group.
To their credit, England’s record in qualifiers is exceptional – it’s just in the competition proper that things go rotten.
