Ok, here we are the climax of the season and no matter what you think of the format, it’s upon us. I personally don’t hate the handicapped start to the tournament as passionately as some, but I do take the point that it does seem a trifle unfair that JT, who has not won a tournament all year, suddenly goes to the top of the FEDEX cup leader board and get a two shot jump on second, and a multiple shot lead on the rest of the field. But I’m sure the powers that be at the PGA will work it out all in good time. It is what it is this year, and I for one don’t actually think the bookies favourite, Justin Thomas, will end up winning the Fedex Cup.
The roll of winners at the par 70, 7,346 yard East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia is a fairly diverse mix of players who specialise in accuracy off the tees and big ball power hitters, so I’m not going to worry too much about course specialists this week. Instead I’m going to look for value and players who have the ability to get on a birdie roll, catch Thomas, and maybe even pass him.
Because it is only a field of thirty I have restricted my tips to two players.
Blue Horseshoe Loves:
BROOKS KOEPKA – currently at 5/1 with starsports.bet
I think this stage is custom made for Brooks Kopeka. The big man eats pressure for breakfast and in this format, starting from behind, with the odds squarely against him and with the world watching, I think he will be up for the fight good and proper.
Over the last season or two we have all seen that when Koepka is hot he is more than capable of shooting low and blitzing any field. This might not be a major, but you try and tell me this guy won’t be up for winning the PGA Tour Championship and hoisting one more big trophy this season.
I have won on Koepka repeatedly this season and for me it’s Brooks Koepka to win the FedEx Cup, all day long.
XANDER SCHAUFFELE – currently at 25/1 with starsports.bet
This is one is for those of you who might seeking a bit more each way value. Make no mistake, at six shots behind Thomas, Xander Schauffele is real longshot. But he does have good form at this venue, winning the Tour Championship here two years ago and finishing a very respectable seventh here last year. He loves the course and he may just be a good option for you brave souls and lovers of exotics.
Here’s hoping it’s a fitting climax to what has been a fantastic Season on the PGA Tour.
Stayed tuned for next season when Blue Horseshoe and Star Sports Bet – The Gentleman’s Bookmaker, launch a brand new golf preview service free to all Star Sports followers.
The Course Whisperer will be bringing you inside word from each PGA tour event on who is flushing them at the driving range and who is tearing up the course during the practice days leading up to each individual tournament. It should be a great addition of valuable knowledge to help you make more informed golfing selections.
See you all for the start of the 2020 season. Happy Punting.
