STAR PREVIEW: Arsenal v Spurs

Quarter-finals in the Carabao Cup are often lower key affairs than big Premier League clashes or their FA Cup counterparts but that is unlikely to be the case when Arsenal and Tottenham meet tonight.

The North London Derby is always a huge tie but there’s an extra edge on this occasion, with a spot in the semi-finals up for grabs. Unai Emery would be greatly boosted by making a first semi-final appearance whilst for all his brilliant progress at Spurs, Mauricio Pochettino has yet to take a trophy.

With this in mind, it could be that we see reasonably strong teams out. Both managers have plenty of options – Emery has used the Europa League to blood a number of impressive young players for example – but the importance of the derby could see a full throated line up.

In any case, Lichsteiner, Mustafi, Mkhitaryan, Ramsey, Maitland-Niles, and Guendouzi started against Blackpool, whilst Spurs started Aurier, Winks, Wanyama, Alli, Eriksen and Son against West Ham.

Arsenal’s winning run came to an end against Southampton, a game which showcased some of the flaws in Emery’s side – although they had been previously unbeaten for 22 games – and one of those was a deeply impressive win against Spurs with both sides at full strength.
