STAR PREVIEW: Arsenal v Vitoria Guimaraes

Arsenal had yet another nightmare away day when they lost at Sheffield United on Monday but they are a different team at the Emirates and can keep on marching on in the Europa League with victory against Vitoria Guimares.

The nature of their performance on Monday has put many comfortable questions at the door of Unai Emery but one thing in his favour is how effective the Gunners are at home. Arsenal have won 16 of their 20 home games in 2019, and they are also very effective in the Europa League, a competition Emery specialises in.

Arsenal have won both their Europa League group games, scoring seven goals and perhaps even more encouragingly kept clean sheets in a 3-0 success at Frankfurt and 4-0 success here against Standard Liege. The Europa League has seen some impressive and very bright performances from Joe Willock, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, with the latter particularly exciting Gunners; the Brazilian has scored four goals in his first two starts for Arsenal and proven to be a particularly formidable figure in the air, something which Emery will look to use against a Vitoria side that has struggled to defend crosses and set-pieces this season.

First meeting between two sides

Vitoria came through three play-off rounds to make it here but have been found out by the step up in class to the group stages, failing to score in two defeats to Standard Liege (2-0 away) and Eintracht Frankfurt (1-0 at home) and it’s rather ominous for them that Arsenal have beaten the same opposition 3 and 4-0 in their two games so far.

They did manage to fire plenty of shots off in Belgium – they won the shot and shots on target count against Liege, and had more shots against Frankfurt – but Arsenal are a different level to those two on all known form and they should be too good once again. Arsenal have won both games in the group stage this season whilst scoring 3 goals or more and 20 games at the Emirates this year have averaged 3.25 goals a game, so the hosts to win a game with over 2.5 goals could be a value bet.
