STAR PREVIEW: Blackburn v Wigan

It’s the last game of football in England before Christmas and Blackburn can send their home fans happy for the holidays with victory over Wigan. Tony Mowbray has done a fine job in restoring pride at Ewood Park, with Rovers being promoted from League One two seasons ago and now establishing themselves as a second-tier outfit.

Blackburn come here in a rich vein of form and are now within touching distance of the Championship play-offs following their impressive victory over Bristol City at Ashton Gate. That was their sixth win in eight, and more impressively it came despite six changes to the starting XI from Tony Mowbray, who can now pick from top scorer Bradley Dack, Joe Rothwell, Corry Evans, Danny Graham and Adam Armstrong, all of whom were rested for the 2-0 victory last week.

JAN 2015 CHAMPIONSHIP Wigan 1-1 Blackburn
SEP 2014 CHAMPIONSHIP Blackburn 3-1 Wigan
MAY 2014 CHAMPIONSHIP Blackburn 4-3 Wigan
OCT 2013 CHAMPIONSHIP Wigan 2-1 Blackburn

This is not a great time to be visiting for Wigan, who haven’t adapted to life at the top level in the same way that Blackburn have (they won League One in 2017-18 when Blackburn were just two points behind). They’ve not won in ten matches and they’ve won just two away games in the Champioship since their return – they’ve drawn eight and lost a huge 24.

Long term, it must be a worry that Kieffer Moore has scored just two goals since arriving in the summer and they need more firepower if home games are to keep their heads above water – it might be too big an ask to get anything from Ewood Park today.
