STAR PREVIEW: Brentford v WBA

It might have been delayed, but the end of the Championship season has been just as exciting as ever and Brentford can give themselves an outside chance of automatic promotion with victory over West Brom tonight. When the season restarted, West Brom had a ten-point lead over Brentford but the pair have had very different returns to football, with Brentford scoring twice in the last five minutes to nick victory from Fulham, whilst West Brom were lacklustre in a 0-0 draw against Birmingham when the vast majority of their 21 attempts weren’t really threatening.

HEAD TO HEAD RECORD
(Maximum 10 matches, since 2010)
DEC 2019 CHAMPIONSHIP West Brom 1-1 Brentford
MAR 2019 CHAMPIONSHIP Brentford 0-1 West Brom
DEC 2018 CHAMPIONSHIP West Brom 1-1 Brentford

Brentford’s goals to beat Fulham came very late (the introduction of Emiliano Marcondes proving to be the game changer, as he set up Said Benrahma for the opener and then sealed the deal himself with the second in the 90th minute) but they had already gone close with Tariqe Fosu, top scorer Ollie Watkins and Christian Norgaard all going close beforehand.

Those names give Thomas Frank more than enough firepower to deal without Bryan Mbeumo (14 goals this season), who is self-isolating after testing positive for coronavirus, and they are all capable of giving West Brom plenty of problems tonight.

The Baggies should not be discounted here, and could well improve a good deal for their first outing in three months, but their record against the Championship’s top opposition has not been that impressive – they’ve taken just three points from four matches against the rest of the Championship top four – and Brentford look fairly priced to strike a hammer blow.
