STAR PREVIEW: Brighton v Newcastle

Whilst all eyes have been towards the head of the Premier League – and how thrilling it has been – there’s still the big matter of a relegation battle at the bottom. Following the relegation of Fulham and Huddersfield, only one side can still go down, and two teams are fighting to stay up.

One of them is Brighton, who are just three points ahead of Cardiff following their last gasp defeat at Tottenham this week. That was their sixth defeat in seven games, and another situation in which they offered precious little going forward. Chris Hughton’s strategy of sitting deep as possible and sneaking a point almost worked twice against high class opposition, but today we will have to see more from Pascal Gross, Florin Andone and Alireza Jahanbakhsh.

After today’s encounter, Albion face title chasing Manchester City and top four hunting Arsenal, so this is really more of a nine pointer, especially given that Cardiff have fixtures against already relegated Fulham and then host Crystal Palace before facing Manchester United.

Necessity does not guarantee victory however, and Newcastle come here in good form. They were deserved 3-1 winners over Southampton at the weekend, with an Ayoze Perez hat-trick capping off a clinical performance. The week before they restricted the in-form Leicester to just five shots on target in a fine smash and grab win.
