STAR PREVIEW: Cardiff v Burnley

Both Cardiff and Burnley have had a tough start to life back in the Premier League and Neil Warnock’s men could be feeling rather blue after Sunday’s clash with Burnley.

Cardiff went up in second in the Championship last year, but they have not been able to invest as much as others and those gaps have been exposed in a difficult start to the season. They’re second from bottom and winless in seven games across all competitions, although the fixture list has not been kind to them – they’ve already faced City, Chelsea and Arsenal in the first part of the season.

Burnley are not far ahead of Cardiff, with a difficult start to the season (their worst start to a top-flight season since 1927 in fact) including a valiant but unsuccessful attempt to qualify for the Europa League. However, they’ve also had a tough fixture list – they’ve played Watford, Fulham, and Manchester United so far and they were right back on form with a fantastic 4-0 win against Bournemouth last week.

Goals from Matej Vydra and Aaron Lennon put them in control and they were fully deserving of the win, sealed by a double from Ashley Barnes. That ought to have a huge mental lift on the squad after a long time without success and it’s worth remembering that there’s still plenty of quality in the side. Much of the same XI that finished in the European places last season is still around and they can also make themselves very tough to beat against bottom half opposition.

However, outside of their matches against the Big Six, they have held both Newcastle and Huddersfield to goalless draws, on both occasions sitting deep and providing difficult for those sides to break down.
