STAR PREVIEW: Charles Schwab Challenge with BLUE HORSESHOE

G’day Golf fans! I don’t think I’ve ever been as happy to write those three little words as I am this week. After what can only be described as a golfless purgatory, we are back with some PGA Tour golf!

I for one couldn’t give a toss about the lack of crowds. At least I won’t have to listen to some drunken Yank scream; ‘Get in the Hole!’,  ‘Mashed Potato!, ‘Bababoyee! or any other variation of their pearls of wisdom delivered after every shot and a dozen oat sodas.

It’s going to be a little bit of a crap shoot this week, because there is no recent form to go on. So let’s instead concentrate on the course itself and whose games might suit it. The tournament, hosted at the Colonial Country Club since 1946, is one of the oldest on the PGA Tour. It is a short, tight, par 70 track with small greens. The roll call of past winners such as Kevin Na, Kevin Kisner and Jordan Spieth, points to players who are known accurate drivers and precision iron players. This is without doubt a course that rewards a solid ball striking and scrambling game. STAR SPORTS HAVE A MONEY BACK SPECIAL IF YOUR PLAYER MISSES THE CUT – SEE DETAILS BELOW.

There is some HUGE value out there with some very decent players at three figure odds. But as a wise man once said; You can’t take ‘em all, so as always, I’m looking for proven performers, who represent great each way value.

Blue Horseshoe Loves

Patrick Reed, currently at 28/1 with

Before the lock down, Reed had been showing some superb form, climbing to number seven in the world of the back of a string of top ten performances and a win in late February at the WGC in Mexico City. The man that many love to hate was in the form of his life, led by an excellent iron game and putting game. If Reed has managed to maintain that form, he will be very hard to keep off the top page of the leader board, on a course that should suit his game well.

Xander Schauffele, currently at 28/1 with

Schauffele had a stuttering start to 2020, but I remain convinced of the young man’s enormous class. He is not the longest hitter, so this course helps him in that regard. He is known as a very hard worker on his game, so during the break he may have been able to concentrate on fixing the little gremlins in his swing and get back to where he was in 2019, which was firmly inside the top ten and a majors contender on multiple occasions.

Collin Morikawa, currently at 45/1 with

Morikawa flattered to deceive in the first part of the 2019/2020 season. He made a number of highly encouraging starts in a range of tournaments and often sat high on the leader board, only to be undone by one sloppy round. He is another that is not super long, but relies more on a strong accuracy based game. This kid is a very intelligent player and a future star of the game. If he has used this enforced layoff to get his head around the approach required to win on the PGA Tour he could be a great each way price.

Daniel Berger, currently at 66/1 with

Berger’s game is all about accuracy and ball striking. He currently sits 41st on the PGA season stats for driving accuracy and his performances were trending nicely upwards, following a long layoff with injury. He is known as a real grinder on his game and this course, which is set up to play to many of his strengths, might just help him regain the impetus he was building before the break.

Since this is the first tournament back for a while, here’s one more for the Joe Exotic’s out there:

Bubba Watson, currently at 125/1 with

I know the guy can be a bit all over the shop with his driver, but there are a dozen dog legs on this course and no one can sling it over or around corners like Watson. This can result in him being able to seriously shorten holes with his length. If the guy’s game is dialled in, 125/1 is mad money for a small each way poke for the two times Masters champion.

Good luck golf fans, it’s great to be back!
