West Ham are one of those teams that have made for simple reading recently. At home, they usually win. On the road, they usually lose.
That losing streak away from the London Stadium – which they have managed to make their new home a bit more solid since the start of the season – looks set to cost them a handful of places at least, even before their trip to Chelsea for tonight’s Premier League clash.
Manuel Pellegrini’s men have lost their touch in front of goals on the road – they’ve managed to score just one goal in six league away games – and that will be music to the ears of Maurizio Sarri, who had an easier night in midweek as Chelsea swatted aside Brighton 3-0 in midweek.
That dominant showing – Chelsea had an expected goals count of 2.8 to Brighton’s 0.4 – was one of Chelsea’s better recent performances as Eden Hazard, Rueben Loftus-Cheek and Callum Hudson-Odoi all dominated from midfield in a comfortable win.
Chelsea’s season has been beset with issues at various points, but in the heat of the moment it is easy to forget the quality that they have at their disposal and they are facing West Ham at a good time, even with a Europa League quarter-final coming later in the week.
A likely defensive trio of David Luiz, Zappacosta and Andreas Christensen have been vulnerable on many occasions this season but West Ham lost the shot count 17-3 to Everton last week, and the Chelsea defence has been improved for the addition of Emerson to the side in place of Marcos Alonso, who was severely out of form before he was taken out of the side.
