STAR PREVIEW: Derby v Charlton

It’s been a hell of a decade in the Championship and it could end with a bang as Derby face Charlton tonight. There’s not much appeal in either of the two teams to win outright. Derby have gone seven games without a win and prior to Thursday’s win against Bristol City Charlton hadn’t won since October.

The best route into this game could be to go for both sides to score. Yes, Derby have been one of the lowest scoring sides in the Championship so far but Charlton have conceded twice in their last three matches. Going back further, they’ve conceded in each of their last 12 matches and they have only had one clean sheet on their travels this season.

DEC 2013 CHAMPIONSHIP Charlton 0-2 Derby
SEP 2012 CHAMPIONSHIP Charlton 1-1 Derby

Derby have struggled for goals in general but they’ve scored in ten of their last eleven at home, where their record is much better than their overall one (W5-D5-L2); That said, they’ve not kept a clean sheet in their last seven games since a 1-0 win against Preston and they’ve hardly been outstanding defensively.

Charlton have a twin attacking threat with Lyle Taylor and Macauley Bonne but with ten men absent, Lee Bowyer has had to make more than a few defensive alterations, and Tom Lawrence and Matryn Waghorn have the quality to get on the scoresheet at least once.
