STAR PREVIEW: Down Royal Tuesday

Sport has been devastated by Coronavirus and racing has unfortunately succumbed too, with the news that British racing will undergo a shutdown from tomorrow until the end of April at least.

Racing from Taunton, Down Royal, Wexford and Wetherby
Live on Racing TV from 1:45 pm
First Race: Bluegrass Maiden Hurdle (off time 1.50pm)

There’s racing at Taunton, Down Royal, Wexford and Wetherby today and a couple of interesting bets to be had on what is going to be the last day’s racing for a good while. The horses of interest are at Down Royal, which looks to be the best meeting of the day, with two of interest in the Cleary Contracting Ltd Novice Handicap Hurdle (3.00) Groody Rover sprung a surprise when landing a Clonmel maiden hurdle a fortnight ago but it’s interesting to note that he was ridden more prominently there on his second start at two miles, having never landed a blow when unplaced at Naas a couple of weeks beforehand.

Leading this field will be harder, but front running at this trip could be the key to this six year old going forward and he looks generously priced to do so. In what is one of the best races of the day, have two against the field in the shape of Metal Man. He was another who ran from the front in victory last time, and whilst there will be a stronger pace today, he probably has more improvement to come given that he was found to be clinically abnormal when only eighth at Gowran in February.

There are some good types in the Racing TV Chase (4.10) but none who make enough appeal to back, so it’s off to the Johnston Houston Mares Flat Race (5.20) for a closing bet, where Delvino can get off the mark. The form of her second at Navan was done no harm when the winner Julies Stowaway was an excellent seventh in the Champion Bumper at the Festival. She should be able to step forward from that and can take the beating in a race where the second favourite Beth Horan looks exposed now and any newcomer will have to reach a high standard to beat her.
