STAR PREVIEW: Farmers Insurance Open

Two tournaments into 2020, a first in week one (45/1) and a second in week two (45/1) writes BLUE HORSESHOENot too shabby !

For a minute I thought my tip Abraham Ancer was going to pull off the mother of all comebacks and win the American Express. But erasing an eight shot deficit and climbing into second is a good result anyway you look at it.

This week the tour heads to Torey Pines on the coast of California for the Farmers Insurance Open. There are some big names here like Woods, Rose and McIlroy. But once again I’m going to provide some names that I think represent real each-way value based on their current form, or history of good performances on the notoriously tricky clifftop course.

Blue Horseshoe Loves:

Gary Woodland at 25/1 with

Torey Pines cliff top fairways demand you to be long and straight off the tee’s and Gary Woodland is just that, consistently residing in the top ten for driving distance and accuracy in 2019. He played well here last year, finishing in a tie for ninth with an excellent final round 66. Woodland has started solidly this season with some good performances in Asia and a strong finish at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii. Expect Woodland to be at the business end of a lot of tournaments this year.

Sam Burns at 175/1 with

I tipped Sam Burns a couple of times last year, but he suffered from that ‘one bad round’ syndrome. The guy has the undoubted ability to belie his huge odds this week. He finished with a searing 63 to tie for 6th at the American Express last week and he looks in great form. If he can bring that game that he displayed on Sunday with him to Torey Pines he could be a great each way shout at huge odds.

Collin Morikawa at 33/1 with

I was quite stunned by this kid’s ability at the Sony Open in Hawaii a couple of weeks ago. Despite the fact that his game fell apart a bit in the torrential conditions of the final round, Morikawa spent three days showing off his prodigious shot making abilities. Tee to green, this kid has got some serious game. He’s well rested after taking last week off and if he gets a good start, he’ll be right there come round four.

Cameron Smith at 40/1 with

I think Cameron Smith is going to have a breakout year in 2020. His win at the Sony Open and his excellent performance at the Presidents Cup showed the undoubted talent and ability that the Australian has. There’s no reason why he can’t kick on from his victory two weeks ago. He’s in great form, is well rested and played very well at this tournament last year finishing in a tie for ninth with a superb final round 65. Go again me little Aussie Battler!
