STAR PREVIEW Fri: Aston Villa v Southampton

Steven Gerrard will be looking to ease some of the pressure building on his shoulders when his Aston Villa side host Southampton in the Premier League at Villa Park on Friday night.

Following a tough start to the season, with questions beginning to be asked of Gerrard, many assumed that they would be on the wrong end of a thrashing in their last outing against Manchester City.

However, Villa stood firm and, despite going 1-0 down thanks to a goal from Erling Haaland, they managed to show resilience and guts to fight back, level the scores thanks to a Leon Bailey goal and pick up a really useful point.

Gerrard will be hoping that his players can take some confidence from that result and will be able to build some momentum from it that they can carry into this clash with Southampton.

Right-back Matty Cash picked up a hamstring injury so will be unavailable on Friday night while defender Diego Carlos is still nursing a long-term achilles injury.

Southampton have had a mixed start to the season and sit in 12th-position with two wins, one draw and three defeats from their opening six Premier League matches.

They beat Chelsea 2-1 a couple of weeks back with goals from Romeo Lavia and Adam Armstrong grabbing a superb victory for Ralph Hassenhuttlโ€™s side.

However, they backed it up with a disappointing 1-0 defeat from Wolves which probably shows where Saints are right now. They have the nucleus of a good side but, at the moment, are still young, inexperienced and a bit inconsistent.

Something appears to be building, though, with an excellent young core of players coming through with summer signings Lavia, Armel Bella-Kotchap and Samuel Edozie already looking like excellent investments.

Lavia, sadly, is likely to miss out here through injury but that may mean a start for late arrival Ainsley Maitland-Niles in midfield.

Although Southampton have had the slightly more encouraging start to the new season of the two sides, there isnโ€™t a massive amount to separate between these teams in terms of quality. I think they could play out a draw on Friday night and that is what I am backing at 5/2.
