STAR PREVIEW Fri: Northern Ireland Women v England Women

Two home nations go head-to-head on Friday evening as Northern Ireland Women take on England Women at the St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton.

It has been not been a great surprise but Northern Ireland have struggled in their first-ever appearance at a major tournament with two defeats from their opening two games – the most recent being a 1-0 loss at the hands of Austria – meaning their EURO 2022 experience will be a brief one.

That said, Northern Ireland will be keen to have something to show from this tournament and will no doubt be motivated to pick up their first point at a major tournament.

Kenny Shiels may be tempted to shuffle the pack slightly for this final game and will be forced into one or two changes as well. Simone Magill picked up a heartbreaking injury in their opening match against Norway and looks for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

England were in absolute dreamland on Monday night; securing an emphatic 8-0 win over Norway with a performance that undoubtedly sent out a statement that the Lionesses are a serious threat at this tournament.

Despite being billed a real test of England’s credentials, the Lionesses made light work of Norway with goals from Georgia Stanway, Lauren Hemp, Ellen White and Beth Mead giving Sarina Wiegman’s side a 6-0 lead before half-time.

The Lionesses then added a further two goals in the second-half, which saw them break their own record for the biggest ever win at the Women’s European Championships.

Despite securing qualification already, Wiegman has said that she has no intention to rest players for this fixture against Northern Ireland with the 52-year-old keen to carry on the Lionesses’ momentum.

England must, of course, avoid falling into the trap of underestimating their opponents here but – if they are capable of performing how we all know they can perform – this should be a relatively straightforward night for them.
