STAR PREVIEW: Germany v England (ITV)

[dropcap]A[/dropcap] little bit of Saturday night takeaway (and I’m NOT talking about Ant And Dec) to accompany Germany v England tonight looks on the cards for me, alongside a little financial interest of course.

The market was moving against Germany earlier today with Star punters keen to back both the draw and/or England according to Trevor Harris on the Star trading desk but Germany remain odds-on for the win at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

We’ll get a much clearer picture on the respective form of the two sides as Euro 2016 gets closer. England have impressed against mainly weaker opposition since Brazil (a perfect 10 from 10) whereas Germany have looked a long way short of their best – losing two of their last three games against The Republic Of Ireland and France where they failed to score a goal. They also struggled to get past lowly Georgia in the qualifiers.

However, like a racehorse being prepared for a Classic, we can be pretty certain that the Germans are being kept under wraps until the main occasion and as always with friendlies the form book can go out of the window. The World Cup holders certainly have not capitulated that much since Brazil.

Four Spurs players will start for England. Danny Rose makes his debut at left-back, while midfield duo Dele Alli and Eric Dier join the Premier League’s top scorer this season Harry Kane.

Manager Roy Hodgson said: “If they carry on and play as well for England as they do for Spurs, that would be advantageous.”

England and Germany will wear black armbands in memory of Johan Cruyff, the Netherlands great who died of cancer aged 68 on Thursday.
