STAR PREVIEW: Germany v Saudi Arabia

Germany are one of the big favourites for this summer’s World Cup in Russia and they should finish their preparation with a victory against fellow finalists Saudi Arabia.

Joachim Low’s men qualified for Russia with a minimum of fuss and since then they have kept plenty to themselves, going without a win in five matches and raising a few eyebrows. However, in those five games, they drew with England, France, and Spain before losing to Brazil and recently Austria.

They were particularly lacklustre in defeat to Austria but Low would have been more concerned with the return of Manuel Neuer just 15 days before the tournament started. Leroy Sane was axed from the World Cup squad after that performance whilst Mesut Ozil and Joshua Kimmich both had poor showings which Low will not expect to see repeated.

Bayern Munich pair Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels were rested along with Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos to get over what has been a long club season, and the return of all three should improve the side regardless of the context.

In any case, Saudi Arabia are considerably lesser opposition. The Green Falcons have done well to make the finals but they were comprehensively beaten by Peru in St Gallen on Sunday and the Germans ought to consider themselves a far superior side. In qualifying Saudi earned 13 of their 10 points at home, something which does not bode well for friendless or the World Cup, and they will do well to strike a real blow.
