Liverpool fans have long memories of meetings with Chelsea at Anfield and this might be another one to forget following today’s crunch clash. The visit of the Blues is the hardest game on paper that Jurgen Klopp’s men have left in their Premier League run in, and victory here would put pressure on City, who must face Tottenham at home and then a Manchester Derby at Old Trafford in their run in, along with a trip to Crystal Palace today.
However, Liverpool, whilst putting a fine Manchester City side under an extraordinary amount of pressure, have not been playing with the zip that characterised their performances earlier in the season. That’s understandable in the thick of the title race but recently the scrapes have become closer and closer for them. They needed a Hugo Lloris clanger to earn victory over Tottenham and their 2-1 victory over Fulham was another uncomfortable scrape where Sadio Mane was once again the difference between victory and defeat – not forgetting their 3-1 win against Southampton when they had to thank Jordan Henderson for a stunning late show.

Maurizio Sarri has had a rough time of things during parts of this season but he has five wins in his last six with Eden Hazard – for now – still lighting up the pitch wherever he goes, and Chelsea appear to have settled on a side that suits them now. Liverpool will aim to run the legs off Chelsea but playing on the break is sure to suit the visitors, who took a 2-1 victory using a similar gameplan in the Carabao Cup. 23/20 on them derailing Liverpool’s title challenge could be a small bit of value.
