STAR PREVIEW: Man City v Chelsea

Manchester City have taken the initiative in the Premier League’s title race and they can keep their noses in-front, whilst also taking revenge on Chelsea for their 2-0 victory in December.

The only slip up up that Guardiola’s men have made in 2019 was a 2-1 defeat at Newcastle but that was merely a mistake which is dwarfed by their sensational form. Before then they had won their last four league games by an aggregate of 12-2 and if one adds their cup successes, then it becomes a staggering 33-2.

A Sergio Aguero hat-trick gave them an entirely deserved 3-1 success against Arsenal, the highest played side that they have faced, but the team is stacked with goalscoring talent, as readers will know. Bernardo Silva was excellent all game against Arsenal whilst Raheem Sterling set up two of Aguero’s goals then and they battled hard to get past Everton, a side who have often given them trouble.

Chelsea did give City a shock defeat in the reverse fixture – which actually knocked them off the top of the league table at the time – but the 2-0 scoreline in that fixture was incredibly flattering, with City dominating the game until N’Golo Kantè’s sucker punch at half time and more often than not City would win a game when they have 61% and won the shots (14-8) and corners (13-1) count.

In any case, since then, the Blues have struggled for consistency, failing to win half of their last eight games with the side struggling badly for goals. Gonzalo Higuaín’s arrival (with his trusted manager) has started well with two goals against Huddersfield but it remains to be seen if he starts and even then this is a different level of competition for Chelsea.

Putting in five against Huddersfield was a welcome respite but their last two away days have seen a 2-0 defeat against Arsenal and then amazingly a 4-0 defeat against Bournemouth afterwards, and they face what must be the toughest trip in English football.
