STAR PREVIEW: MK Dons v Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has brought much success to Liverpool – a sixth European Cup that will be forever treasured, and becoming a Premier League force – but the domestic cups have bypassed Liverpool during his tenure so far.

That could continue to be the case – certainly they’ve got bigger priorities once again, with the Premier League now the be all and end all and Europe sure to command much attention – but they’re expected to get through their third round tie in the EFL Cup against MK Dons this evening.

(Maximum 10 matches, Since 2000)
First meeting since 2000 (MK Dons 1-2 Liverpool, Sunday 16th April)

A title challenge was expected from MK Dons in the league before the season started, but they sit 15th in League One after failing to find any sort of consistency. They’ve won four and lost five league games so far and were pretty abysmal when losing 1-0 to Southend at Stadium: MK on Saturday.

It’s not a great sign that they’ve beaten just one top ten side all season and Liverpool could probably have found worse ties. The Reds have fallen at the first hurdle in their last two EFL Cup campaigns but last season they faced eventual runners-up Chelsea and the season before they were tasked with a trip to Leicester.

We don’t know who exactly Klopp will choose to play tonight but this is a far less testing assignment and Klopp has probably never had as much squad depth at Liverpool. They should prove to be too good for their hosts this evening in a game when stakes should be kept low.
