STAR PREVIEW Mon: Everton v Southampton

The Everton squad will still be on cloud nine following their Merseyside Derby win over Liverpool at Anfield and they can keep pace with the fight for Champions League football with victory over Southampton this evening.

Everton’s record at Goodison is a very valid concern – they’ve taken one point from a possible 15 at home in 2021, losing to West Ham, Newcastle, and Fulham in that time – but the visit of Southampton could come at just the right time for the Toffees. Southampton were briefly top of the table in the first week of November, but the rest of the season’s been a nightmare for them since, with seven defeats and a draw in their last eight games wrecking any serious ambitions they had for the rest of the campaign.

Much of that can be explained by the injury crisis. Midfielder Oriol Romeu is set to miss the rest of the season because of a fractured ankle and on-loan Liverpool forward Takumi Minamino ruled out of tonight’s because of a hamstring problem. Minamino’s absence is a particularly bitter blow given the quick impact he’d made with goals in two of his three starts. Elsewhere, Kyle Walker-Peters, Theo Walcott, Ibrahima Diallo, Michael Obafemi and William Smallbone are all out for varying lengths of time.

The Saints have also thrown in some wretched away performances too – their last three trips have seen that 9-0 thumping at Manchester United after Alex Jankewitz was sent off in the second minute, a 3-2 defeat at Newcastle (who played 40 minuities with ten men and then ended the game with nine men) and a 3-0 loss at Leeds – and this might be the ideal time for Everton to host them.

There’s also positive team news, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Allan supposedly set to return to the starting XI today whilst Richarlison has four goals in his last four games and should also provide a big threat. Everton look the play here for those getting involved.
