STAR PREVIEW Mon: West Ham v Leicester City

Two of last season’s surprise packages will meet in the first Monday night clash of the new Premier League season when Leicester City make the trip to the London Stadium to face West Ham United.

Under the stewardship of the vastly experienced David Moyes, West Ham enjoyed a fabulous 2020/21 campaign. Despite many predicting them for the drop, Moyes guided the Hammers into Europe with a very respectable 6th-place finish.

With Declan Rice holding the middle of the park superbly, and with help from January loan signing Jesse Lingard in attack, West Ham really defied the critics – but can they do it again this season?

The summer window hasn’t exactly been busy. The only addition that Moyes has managed to make to his squad far is the loan signing of PSG shot-stopper Alphonse Areola. However, despite that, the Hammers made an excellent start to the season with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Newcastle United at St James Park.

Not many people expect West Ham to repeat their success of last season. However, a win against a very handy Leicester City side may start to change the minds of those doubters.

It was a case of déjà vu on the last game of last season for Leicester City when their 4-2 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur saw them slip out of the top-four again, despite spending more time in the Champions League places than any other Premier League club over the last two seasons.

They got this season off to a flyer, though, by defeating the reigning Premier League champions Manchester City in the Community Shield thanks to a late penalty from Kelechi Iheanacho against his old club.

And, despite a slightly sub-par performance, Jamie Vardy’s first-half strike was enough to scrape past Bruno Lage’s Wolverhampton Wanderers in their opening Premier League match of the new season.

Both sides have plenty to offer and both sides should go well this season; although perhaps won’t threaten the top-four again as a result of the so-called ‘super clubs’ spending big this summer. It is difficult to separate them at this early stage of the campaign and that’s why we are backing the Draw in this one.
