STAR PREVIEW: National League Betting Tips (22nd January)

The tussle at the top between Chesterfield and FC Halifax Town continued this week in the National League with the Spireites missing the opportunity to take top-spot, whilst Weymouth drafted Oxford City boss David Oldfield in as their new manager in an attempt to try and stave off the very real threat of relegation.

Here are our betting tips for what is sure to be another exciting weekend of National League action!

Here are our betting tips for what is sure to be an exciting weekend of National League action!

Boreham Wood v Weymouth
15:00 National League

David Oldfield made the bold call to leave high-flying National League South side Oxford City in the week to take over at struggling Weymouth, who recently sacked boss Brian Stock after seven straight league defeats.

A 1-0 defeat to fellow strugglers Southend United was the final straw for the Weymouth board who sacked Stock after just under two years at the helm. They’ll be hoping for the classic new manager bounce with Oldfield taking charge of his first game, but come up against promotion-chasing Boreham Wood.

Boreham Wood are unbeaten in their last six league matches, winning three and drawing three, and currently sit 4th in the National League table; still holding hope they can put together a surge towards the automatic-promotion spot.

However, with 29 goals scored in 20 matches, Luke Garrard’s side are far from the highest scorers in the National League. I expect Weymouth to go back to basics a bit here and sure up defensively in a bid to stop their rot. However, I expect Boreham Wood to have the quality to find a way through in a low-scoring affair.

Altrincham v Torquay United
15:00 National League

Altrincham are desperately looking to arrest their worrying slide down the National League table when they welcome mid-table Torquay United to Moss Lane at the weekend.

Phil Parkinson’s side have lost five of their last six league matches and slipped down to 16th in the table. Their most recent outing was a 2-0 defeat to another side out-of-form in Grimsby Town with second-half goals from John McAtee and Jordan Maguire-Drew condemning Alty to defeat.

Torquay’s inconsistency seems to have cost them a shot at the National League play-offs this year with Gary Johnson’s men seemingly destined for a mid-table finish. However, they still have quality players like Armani Little, who are capable of posing a threat. We’re backing Altrincham’s struggles to continue and the Gulls to pick up all three points.

Dagenham v Redbridge v Stockport County
National League
17:20 BT Sport 1

In the televised match of the weekend, Stockport County will be aiming to continue their surge towards automatic-promotion contention when they travel to Victoria Road for a National League clash with Dagenham & Redbridge.

Since the appointment of Dave Challinor as boss, the Hatters’ form has sky-rocketed with a push towards top-spot now looking like a very real possibility for County. They went third in the table with their mid-week win over Eastleigh; an Andrew Boyce own-goal as well as strikes from Paddy Madden and Connor Jennings securing the win.

This will be a much tougher assignment, though, against a Dagenham side also pushing for promotion. They currently occupy the final play-off spot in the National League with 39 points from 23 matches played and are unbeaten in their last five matches.

However, in their current form, Stockport look difficult to stop. I expect both sides to find the back of the net, but Challinor’s Hatters to come out on top.
