For many, the National Hunt season truly gets going with the first two big handicap chases of the season. Today’s Ladbrokes Trophy is the second of those and it’s a race in which Colin Tizzard has fared well in of late winning it with subsequent Gold Cup scorer Native River in 2016 before saddling a one-two with Sizing Tennessee and Elegant Escape 12 months ago.
The last-named is one of a four strong challenge this time around but with three other races from Newbury also featured on an excellent afternoons racing on ITV it’s far from being the only betting opportunity.
The terrestrial television coverage kicks off with a highly competitive Get Your Ladbrokes £1 Free Bet Today Handicap Hurdle (13:50) over an extended 2m4f which sees the return of Snow Leopardess for trainer Charlie Longsdon. The mare showed good form against her own sex as a novice including when victorious over this course and distance in a Grade 2 novice’s handicap hurdle on good-to-soft ground in March 2017.
The grey has a good record fresh and while she hasn’t been seen in action since registering a victory at Auteuil in September of that year she has a top jockey booked to ride in Aidan Coleman and the daughter of the late Martaline may prove capable of surprising a few of her better fancied rivals at around the 25/1 mark.

Dan Skelton has cemented himself as a top trainer in recent years and his Antunes made the perfect start to this 2019/20 campaign when winning impressively on good-to-soft ground over 2m at Wetherby on his seasonal reappearance last month.
The runner-up that day Theatre Legend filled the same position behind Cornerstone Lad who contests the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth at Newcastle later this afternoon and Antunes looks a horse on the up and can prove capable of defying a nine pound rise in the weights to take the Ladbrokes “Where The Nation Plays” Intermediate Hurdle (14:25).
Willie Mullins summer recruit Cabaret Queen impressed on her second start for the trainer when winning the Munster National at Limerick on her most recent appearance and representing a yard who won this race two years ago with Total Recall, another to have taken the Munster National prior to victory in this prestigious event.
Cabaret Queen has the ground to suit here and she can register her second valuable handicap chase success of the season by taking the days feature Ladbrokes Trophy Chase (15:00).
No Comment ended last season with a good fifth in the Kim Muir over 3m2f at the Cheltenham Festival in March but he didn’t appear to be inconvenienced by the drop back in distance when finishing four lengths third in a 2m5f event on soft ground at Hereford when making his seasonal reappearance earlier this month.
While a further drop in distance to this extended 2m wouldn’t be the most obvious move he’s shown decent form at this distance as a novice hurdler with top jockey Richard Johnson in the saddle for the first time since April 2017 he can register a victory in the Ladbrokes Handicap Chase (15:40).
