This has been a difficult season for juvenile form watchers, with a compacted schedule undoubtedly having an effect on contests seen at the top level, and we should learn an awful lot from the next couple of days at Newmarket.

There are a range of contests at all trips which should tell us a lot about the best juveniles and also next year’s classics, but a sprinter could offer some value early on in the Cornwallis Stakes (1.50).

Favourite Method has been brilliant in a pair of deeply impressive wins at Doncaster and Newbury, beating subsequent group wines on both occasions, and he can be forgiven his Middle Park flop (saddle slipped, and too keen early). However, this is his first time on ground this soft, and on the ratings there isn’t an awful lot between him and Acklam Express on the ratings, and Nigel Tinkler’s charge could be overpriced here.

He was an excellent fourth taking his elders on at Doncaster in listed company last time, and previously he’d just taken another listed prize at York on soft ground, completing a hat-trick in the process. With the ground fine and the track hopefully not a problem for a horse who won a Goodwood Nursery by four and a half lengths, there’s plenty to like about him at 11/2.

The bet365 Fillies’ Mile (3.35) is a high quality renewal at face value, with Indigo Girl getting the vote. She made an incredibly favourable impression in the May Hill and there’s no worries about her on soft ground based on her Yarmouth win. The Irish challengers of Pretty Goregous and Shale are feared, along with Isabella Giles, but John Gosden’s filly has more to come, surely.

The ground could also work in our favour for the Old Rowley Cup (4.10), where the switch back to a surface with cut could be the oracle for Louganini. Roger Charlton’s three-year-old had no luck in running when third at Sandown last time but previously he’d come from miles out of his ground to take a handicap at Haydock on soft ground and he looked ready for this step up in trip even then, so 1m4f on soft ground could bring out a lot of improvement for him – the booking of Hollie Doyle is a bonus.
