STAR PREVIEW: Players Championship Preview

G’day golf fans. I’m going to make it short and sweet this week as, like a lot of you, I’m all about the athletes of the four-legged variety at Cheltenham this week.

That being said there is the fifth Major this week at Sawgrass so let’s see if we can get past the horror show that was The Arnold Palmer Invitational and get back to some decent returns.

If last week’s venue, Bay Hill was all about accuracy and avoiding trouble off the tee, Sawgrass is even more so. For that reason, I’m going for a combination of straight drivers and form horses for what should be another fascinating edition of the Players Championship this weekend.

Blue Horseshoe Loves:

Bernd Wiesberger currently at 125/1 with

I’m making one of the outsiders my main punt this week. Why? Because Wiesberger played well in Mexico a few weeks ago and plays a straight driving, accuracy based, game. You don’t need to be particularly long at Sawgrass, but you do need to be able to stay out of trouble and get the ball in the right spots. This multiple European Tour winner is very good at that.

Webb Simpson currently at 25/1 with

Webb Simpson won this event in 2018. He has also won already this season at the Phoenix Open. Simpson’s name is always at or near the top of the driving accuracy stats every year. This layout is made for Simpson and I expect him to go well here again.

Patrick Cantlay currently at 25/1 with

Cantlay is quoted as saying that his favourite club is his driver, because he hits well with a good deal of consistency. Cantlay won on tour last year and finished high in the FedEx Cup standings. I think Patrick Cantlay is a tremendously talented player who is in for an even bigger season this year.

Matthew Fitzpatrick currently at 66/1 with

I tipped Fitzpatrick last week. He finished well to end up in a tie for ninth. But if it wasn’t for a sloppy third round, he would have been right in the thick of things at the top of the leader board on Sunday. I’m going to stick with him again this week because he is another player who likes tight, accuracy-based tracks and I think he’s a good shout to improve on last-weeks performance.
