STAR PREVIEW: Portsmouth v Derby

Toe in the water with the Capital One first round tonight and I’m off to Fratton Park for Portsmouth v Derby which is live on SKY at 7.45pm.

There are now two tiers between these two sides – it was only in 2008 when they were both Premier League clubs. Derby are now in the Championship and went close last season to getting back into the top flight whereas Portsmouth are in League Two after their dramatic fall from grace which included them entering administration twice in two years.

The Capital One Cup can be really risking punting territory, as we saw last night at Griffin Park with an abject performance by Brentford who were brushed aside 4-0 by Oxford. However, one thing the competition usually can be relied upon for though is goals.

Paul Cook, manager of Portsmouth is expected to make a few changes after they began their season with a win over Dagenham and Redbridge. Striker Conor Chaplin and forward Adam McGurk may start, with Kyle Bennett and Matt Tubbs dropping out.

Derby are without Will Hughes who injured his knee against Bolton on Saturday and could be out for as long as six months.

Derby’s recent form against Portsmouth is strong – winning three of the last four games.
