STAR PREVIEW: Republic Of Ireland v Wales

Less than a month ago Wales started their Europa League campaign with a wide margin victory against Ireland, but a month is a long time in football and this meeting tonight ought to be much more competitive.

That’s not just thanks to the fact it’s being played in Dublin, either. In the reverse fixture Wales had the double benefit of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey, but both are missing for the return fixture here (Bale with injury, and Ramsey as he’s awaiting the birth of twins). It is also a big blow that Ethan Ampadu, deeply impressive in the reverse fixture, won’t play either.

Ireland didn’t pull up any trees in their match with Denmark but the visitors – who interestingly were shorn of Christian Eriksen – struggled to break down the hosts, who lined up in a 3-5-1-1 formation, and it’s not impossible to see something similar happening again especially against a Welsh side that is missing their most creative and quickest player.
