STAR PREVIEW Sat: Chelsea v Manchester City
Despite it still being early days in the 2021/22 Premier League campaign, Saturday’s encounter between Chelsea and Manchester City at Stamford Bridge feels highly significant in the race for the Premier League title.
Chelsea have enjoyed a superb start to the season and currently sit top of the Premier League table with 13 points from five games. Star signing Romelu Lukaku has also settled in remarkably quickly, scoring three goals in his first four matches back at the club.
Last Saturday’s win was a real statement victory, comfortably sweeping aside London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in a 3-0 triumph with Thiago Silva, N’Golo Kante and Antonio Rudiger getting the goals.
They have the opportunity to send out another big statement this weekend. There is no doubt that, after last season’s Champions League triumph, Chelsea are hunting down the Premier League title this year. A victory against the reigning champions would really prove the strength of their credentials.
Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has missed Chelsea’s last two matches through injury but should return for this crucial clash; whereas tricky winger Christian Pulisic remains sidelined for the Blues.

Although it is still early days – and they didn’t exactly fly out the traps in last year’s title-winning campaign – it’s not exactly been a perfect start to this new campaign for Pep Guardiola’s side.
There have been some impressive wins to talk of – with their 6-0 drubbing of Arsenal being the highlight – but have suffered some frustrating results as well.
They were beaten 1-0 on the opening day by Nuno Santo Espirito’s Tottneham Hotspur and were held to a very frustrating goalless draw in their most recent home fixture against Southampton.
A victory over Chelsea on Saturday would be the perfect way to respond, but the fact Chelsea have got the better of Manchester City on the last three occasions – which of course includes that Champions League final in May – will be a cause for concern for the Citizens.
These are two elite football teams and there is no doubt that this will be an intense tactical battle between the two coaches. I’m expecting a bit of a chess match between Guardiola and Tuchel and, therefore, not expecting a thrilling goalfest at the Bridge.
We’re backing Chelsea to make the most of their home advantage and defeat Manchester City in what could be a tight game. For extra value, back a 1-0 win for the home side at 7/1.
