This is the first week the big guns have come out to play in the new 2020 season for the PGA Tour. TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas, has been the sole host of the tournament since 2008. The 7,255 yard par 71 course is set at relatively high altitude, the fairways are wide and the greens are large. In other word’s the course is a doddle for these guys. The scores will be in the mid-twenties under par by Sunday afternoon and it will be a case of who has the hottest putter. Driving accuracy is not particularly important as the fairways are wide and the rough is not especially penal. The altitude brings the shorter drivers into the tournament as well, so I’m looking for good course form and handy chipping and putting exponents.

PATRICK CANTLAY – currently at 12/1 with

Anyone who has read or followed my tips knows this is one of my go to guys. He is always near or at the top of the leader board and he was in the top ten of a lot of the PGA Tour’s stats tables last season. Cantlay has exceptional form here. He was the tournament winner in 2017 and finished second in 2018 (and looked like he was set to win, until a disastrous bogey on the 17th derailed his chance to go back to back) I think Cantlay will be right in the mix again at a venue he clearly enjoys.

BROOKS KOEPKA – currently at 17/2 with

I hate tipping favourites, but Koepka was very good to me last year in terms of winning returns and I fully expect him to take this course by the throat and start his season strongly. The quality of his chipping and putting game is underestimated in my opinion and I think he will put them both to good effect this week.

BUBBA WATSON – currently at 66/1 with

This is a pure each way value play for me. Watson’s price is way to high in my humble opinion. His putting game was woeful last season, but there were signs in the final few events that he was starting to get it sorted out. I am hoping this is the case because the course itself will be easy for a man with his amazing range of shots in the bag.

JASON KOKRAK – currently at 45/1 with

The big hitting American started to show the world how good he was late last season. A string of high leader board finishes saw Kokrak go deep into the FED-EX Cup play offs and I think last season’s performances will only strengthen his belief that he can win on the PGA Tour. The high altitude will help add to his prodigious length of the tee’s, and his early start on day one should hopefully mean calm conditions and a fast start.
