STAR PREVIEW: Southampton v West Ham

Most football fans have more varied wishes for Christmas than things that are solely on the pitch but an unexpected gift for Southampton has been their new manager, Ralph Hasenhuttl. He has gotten a side that struggled to get on the scoresheet hitting the back of the net again and the visit of West Ham might bring more goals.

Southampton had been in the middle of a rotten run (and having a rotten season) until the visit of Arsenal earlier this month, when a double from Danny Ings and a late winner from Charlie Austin saw them end a 22 game unbeaten run for the visitors with a 3-2 victory. They then followed that up with a 3-1 victory over Huddersfield at the weekend, making it back to back wins for the first time since September – in all competitions.

West Ham had been rolling after four wins on the bounce but they found the fine form of Ben Foster and Christian Kabasele too much for them as a resilient Watford side took the spoils from the London Stadium. Few would argue that Watford didn’t deserve the points but West Ham had 18 shots on target and forced seven saves out of Foster.

Before that the Hammers had won their previous four, scoring three in three of those successes, so they should not be underestimated here and it is a slight surprise to see them as the outsiders in the match odds. However it is more tempting to go for over 2.5 goals. Southampton have seen five of their last six go overs and West Ham have the firepower to play their part in a high scoring encounter.
