STAR PREVIEW Sun: Liverpool v Manchester City
Despite it still being early days in the 2021/22 Premier League season, Sunday’s clash between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield still feels highly significant in the race for Premier League glory this year.
Liverpool have enjoyed a very bright start to the new season. They may not be getting the plaudits of some clubs or being weighed down by the crushing expectation for a title like others, but Jurgen Klopp’s side have been quietly going about their business and picking up good results along the way.
Their thrilling 3-3 draw against Brentford last week must have felt like a bit of a blip, but many sides will be caught off guard by the intensity and ingenuity of Thomas Frank’s newly-promoted Bees this season.
A draw was no disgrace and, after Brighton failed to secure maximum points against Crystal Palace on Monday night, Liverpool still sit top of the Premier League with 14 points from their opening six fixtures.
Star men Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have both clearly enjoyed their summer of rest and have started the season like a house on fire. Mane reached the milestone of 100 Liverpool goals a couple of weeks ago and Salah overtook Samuel Eto’o in the Champions League scoring charts to become the second-highest scoring African player in the European club competition thanks to his brace against Porto on Tuesday.
Both players will be desperate for more goals as Liverpool look to send out a statement to the rest of the division that they are very much in the hunt for the Premier League title this season.

Manchester City suffered a blip when they were frustratingly held to a goalless draw by Southampton, but bounced back in emphatic fashion with a 1-0 victory over title rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Gabriel Jesus’ strike eight minutes into the second-half was enough to see off a Chelsea side that were in a very rich vein of form in the lead-up to the match. However, they were unable to carry that momentum into their midweek Champions League fixture.
PSG, spearheaded by the majestic and marvellous Lionel Messi, managed to overcome Pep Guardiola’s side with a 2-0 victory thanks to a first-half strike from Idrissa Gueye and an absolute beauty from Messi in the 74th-minute.
They’ll be looking to bounce back again at Anfield on Sunday, but will be without left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko and midfielder Ilkay Gündogan who have both been ruled out until after the international break through injury.
Liverpool will be without key players as well, though, in creative midfielder Thiago and flying full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold. The deciding factor in this match may well be who can cope with the injuries the best.
We’re backing both sides to cancel each other out and for the match to end in a draw. For extra value, we’re also going for Mohamed Salah to score anytime.
