STAR PREVIEW Sun: Union Berlin v Bayern Munich

The return of German football will have the attention of the footballing world this weekend, and Bayern Munich’s return is sure to be one of the most watched matches of this gameweek.

FC Hollywood travel to Union Berlin at the head of a tight title race – at the beginning of the weekend just eight points separated Bayern in first and Bayer Leverkusen in fifth, and after their 4-0 win against Schalke yesterday Borussia Dortmund are just a point behind – although these are not normal times and there’ll be no atmosphere waiting for the league leaders behind closed doors.

HEAD TO HEAD
(Maximum 10 matches, since 2010)
1st meeting between sides

This is also the first game for both sides for over two months, and with that there is going to be a slight air of uncertainty as to how teams adapt. For German players there is some sort of precedent – that of the winter break – and Bayern had no problems making a fast start to 2020 when returning in January.

Union Berlin didn’t do terribly during that period – between the end of January and mid-February they actually won three games – but in that period they lost 3-1 at Red Bull Lepizig & 5-0 at Borussia Dortmund and the gulf in class (on paper) is a big one, with Munich 25 points clear of their hosts.

There’s a degree of the unknown behind a closed doors game but in theory away sides should be favoured by the situation and Bayern Munich’s obvious class should put them at an advantage here.

It doesn’t hurt that Munich are excellent at scoring on the road – since Niko Kovac was sacked and replaced with Hansi Flick, Munich have scored three or more goals in six of their seven league away matches and maybe the 3-0 correct score is the way to go whilst we’re finding our feet with the restart.
