STAR PREVIEW Thurs: 3M Open
It was great to see our favourite superhero Mullet Man – aka – Cameron Smith, put on a quite magnificent display of putting to take out The Open Championship last week.
His win was made was all the sweeter due to the fact he was one of our tips for the week. Blue Horseshoe has loved Cam Smith for a good few years now – he is a player of prodigious talent.
What Blue Horseshoe will not love is if Smith slopes away to play on the Saudi funny money tour, as he is rumoured to be doing. That will be a bit of heart breaker to be honest. I will not watch that tour for many reasons and to not see one of my favourite golfers plying his trade on the PGA Tour will be a bitter pill to swallow. I just hope that Cam remembers where he came from and where he is now and thinks better of making a decision based solely on money. He really could build a legacy that would see him amongst the greats of the game.
The 3M Open is a world away from the links of St. Andrews. It’s a 7149 yard par 71, parkland course set amongst the trees and lakes of Minnesota. Accuracy is demanded off the tees otherwise you get into all sorts of bother with the deep rough, woods and water hazards. The field is understandably thin this week after the exertions of The Open, but there is the odd bit of potential value to be uncovered.
Blue Horseshoe Loves:
Davis Riley – Currently with starsportsbet
Riley is one of the bright young stars discovered this year on the PGA tour. He has gone close this season in much tougher events than this one. On his day he’s more that match for the majority of this field and I think if the weather is kind to him and he gets away to a good start, he could very well notch his maiden PGA Tour win here.
Sahith Theegala – Currently with starsportsbet
Theegala has been dead unlucky not to get record his first win this season. Twice he’s had victory snatched from his grasp by cruel twists of fate on the last couple of holes coming home. He played very well at his first Open last week and providing he’s not too exhausted by all the travel etc, he looks a good prospect to carry on his strong current form to a win in more familiar surroundings.
Martin Laird – Currently with starsportsbet
Laird came up just short of recording another PGA Tour twin at the Barracuda Championship last week, only being denied the win by Chez Reavie. With his long and accurate driving game, Laird looks well placed to carry on that up trend to a prominent showing here. The course definitely suits his game, and the field holds no fears for a player of his quality.
Rickie Fowler – Currently with starsportsbet
I don’t think I’ve ever tipped Rickie Fowler before, certainly not in the last couple of years anyway, which as we all know have been a horror show. But I’m going to go out on a limb here for a couple of reasons. First, Fowler has been on a definite upward trend in performance as he looks to rediscover his game. The results have certainly been improving this year. And secondly because word on the practice range from some of the tour pros has been that Rickie is flushing his ball striking during his practice sessions. It looks like he may well be turning a big corner and at these odds in this depleted field, I’ll pay to find out.
