STAR PREVIEW Thurs: Burnley v Southampton

Burnley will be taking to the Turf Moor pitch without Sean Dyche at the helm for the first time in nearly ten years as interim boss Mike Jackson leads the Clarets out for a crucial Premier League fixture against Southampton on Thursday evening.

Dyche’s dismissal last week came as a huge shock, but the Clarets did show a response in their first game following the sacking; picking up a useful and respectable point against West Ham United at the London Stadium on Sunday.

Wout Weghorst gave Burnley the lead in the 33rd-minute before Maxwel Cornet missed a spot-kick in first-half stoppage-time. Tomas Soucek then snatched a point for the home side with a 74th-minute equaliser.

Everton’s draw with Leicester City on Wednesday puts pressure on Burnley and this is looking like a must-win match if the Clarets are to have any chance of staying in the Premier League.

They will have to make one enforced change for this fixture with midfielder Ashley Westwood set for a long spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious ankle injury at the weekend.

Southampton’s season had appeared to be fizzling out somewhat, but they did pick up a very impressive 1-0 win over Champions League-chasing Arsenal in their most recent Premier League outing.

Jan Bednarek scored the only goal of the game in a superb win for the Saints, but goalkeeper Fraser Forster was unquestionably the man-of-the-match with the 34-year-old pulling off a number of brilliant saves.

Ralph Hassenhuttl has close to a fully fit squad to choose from with Alex McCarthy the only injury doubt, but the Austrian coach will be pondering whether to stick with the 3-4-3 he went with against Arsenal or revert back to a 4-4-2.

The pressure is all on Burnley here with a lot less at stake for Southampton and their improved performance against West Ham shows that they do still have some fight in their belly. We’re backing Burnley to come away with the three points here and keep the Premier League relegation battle interesting.
