The Women’s EURO 2022 quarter-finals continue when Germany face Austria at the Brentford Community Stadium on Thursday evening.

Germany will be looking to take a step closer to another European Championship title – the ninth in their illustrious history – and go into this quarter-final as the big favourites with Austria one of the surprise sides to make it through to the knockout phase.

As expected, Die Nationalelf cruised through the group-stage of this competition in comfortable fashion with three wins out of three against Denmark, Spain and Finland.

That victory over Spain, in particular, would have sent out a statement to the rest of the tournament that Germany are to be taken seriously and are in with a shout of lifting that trophy at Wembley Stadium.

Austria reached the semi-final stage of their first-ever major tournament in 2017 and they are enjoying success again at EURO 2022.

Despite many expecting Norway to progress to the knockout-stage from Group A, but their 8-0 battering at the hands of England and subsequent defeat to Austria in a final game shootout sent them crashing out and Irene Fuhrmann’s side through.

Fuhrmann will be sweating on the fitness of Viktoria Schnaderbeck who Austria are hoping will be able to recover from a knee injury in time to renew her partnership with Carina Wenninger in the heart of defence.

Germany must not fall into the trap over underestimating their opponents – especially as Austria have proven themselves to be giant-killers at major tournaments in recent seasons – but they should have enough here. We’re backing them to win to nil.
