First Race: Maiden Claiming Race (3yo+ Fillies & Mares) (Turf) (3yo+) (UK Off Time: 6:00pm)
We took one shot at Tampa Bay yesterday, where Blame The Cake was close enough around the corner, but he sadly wasn’t quite fit enough after a long lay-off and eventually he retreated into third behind Sense of Justice. He ran with credit considering the amount of time between runs, and he’d still be of major interest in a maiden this summer with that effort behind him.
Tonight we have to Gulfstream, where there’s a very strong case for Cabrina in the Maiden Claimer (6.34). Unconsidered by the market on her debut here over 5 furlongs when an an 80/1 shot, she came home well off a decent pace to take a creditable fourth after blowing the start, and with an extra half a furlong would have been second. That’s especially promising given that the form is working out well – the runner up filled the same position in another maiden claimer and the third won afterwards to boot. There’s every chance today’s trip improves her on the evidence of her final furlong and she’s also drawn better today too, so she’s the pick in the second race on the card.
The highlight of the evening might well be the Allowance Optional Claiming (8.19) where Untitled can get off the mark this season. Mark Casse’s three-year-old has marked himself out as a decent colt, finishing second to Gouverneur Morris in a Tampa Allowance Optional Claiming before then finishing second in the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct last time out. That day he found only the favourite Mischievous Alex – a previous wide margin winner of the Swale Stakes – too strong and Gouverneur Morris has since finished fourth in the Florida Derby to boot
No Getting Over Me – who also has graded form – is the main threat here, although his 17 length fifth in the Sam Davis Stakes doesn’t look as strong as either of the two graded efforts from Untitled earlier.
