STAR PREVIEW Thurs: Leopardstown Racing

Day 3 of the festival was a great day for readers, as we enjoyed a Grade 1 double as Home By The Lee showed guts and class in equal measure to take the Jack de Bromhead Christmas Hurdle, whilst Conflated was far too good for his rivals in the Savills Chase after the withdrawal of A Plus Tard ensuring a healthy profit on the day.

This has been a meeting dominated by two yards and Willie Mullins can end it on a high thanks to State Man in the Matheson Hurdle. Last season’s County Hurdle winner looked like a Grade 1 horse when making light work of a mark of 141 at the Festival and he’s since landed a pair of Grade 1’s in fine style, winning a Grade 1 novice at Punchestown with ease before taking the Morgiana Hurdle in style, putting four lengths between himself and the four time winner of this race, Sharjah. Sharjah can be expected to improve for his first race in 11 months, but it is difficult to imagine a reversal of the form and State Man can cement his position as the second favourite in the Champion Hurdle market here.

Last year’s Champion juvenile Vauban must be hugely respected here, although attempting to beat the aforementioned pair on his seasonal return is a huge task. Pied Piper is an interesting contender here – Vauban had improved past him at the end of last year, but Pied Piper’s won two races this season without having to do much work and he could be the sharper of the pair.

She Is Electric is a progressive front running mare but her first Graded race proved to be too much for her and surely this will be too.
