STAR PREVIEW Thurs: Mexico Open with BLUE HORSESHOE

We’re down Mexico way this week golf fans.

The Mexico Open comes back to the gorgeous Vidanta resort course for its second hosting of the event. Running out at around 7,500 yards the par 72 course is a bit of a monster! Big drivers and long iron exponents should thrive around here. Jon Rahm and Tony Finau are the big dogs in the pack that the course will suit. This is proven by the fact that these two finished first and second here last year and are back for more.

The rest of the field lacks some of the big hitters and big names, so let’s see if we can dig up any each way value for a big price win after another frustrating placing last week with Mitchell and Im at the Zurich. It’s time to break this long string of placings of late with a win!

Ben Taylor – currently at ? with Star Sports

This price for Taylor just feels wrong to me. Yes, he’s had a pretty poor showing in his last couple of starts, but prior to that he has been in excellent form. He’s been in the mix for the win on a couple of occasions in elite fields earlier this year. I think this could be a great opportunity to have a strong showing in what is not a particularly deep field. The big Englishman also has the ability to get it out there off the tee boxes.

Ben Martin – currently at ? with Star Sports

Martin has been Mr. Consistency this year. He has had three top five finishes in his last five starts and has ranked first in driving accuracy at the Valero Texas Open. Driving accuracy is a huge ace to have in the pack at Vidanta this week. I expect Martin to be back to his consistent ways and right in this.

Akshay Bhatia – currently at ? with Star Sports

There is no doubting Bhatia’s talent for the game. He will win on tour soon enough. What is a little disconcerting is his propensity to ship shots when things come unstuck. He can score birdies in bunches and I’m just hoping he can get a little more mature in his decision making on course and minimize his mistakes. He certainly has the ability to feature strongly against this opposition.

Mark Hubbard – currently at ? with Star Sports

Hubbard’s season has been a bit up and down. He’s had some really solid showings with a 5th at the Sanderson and an 11th at the RBC Heritage recently, but he’s thrown in some stinkers too. Overall though, Hubbard’s game has been on an uptrend this year and I think he could be decent value for a little nudge each way.
