STAR PREVIEW Thurs: TOUR Championship

Well, here we are Golf Fans, the conclusion of another season and the climax to the FedEx Cup.

It’s been a turbulent season, to say the least and sadly, by the looks of it, there are few players competing this week that will be competing in their last PGA Tour event. But there is always emerging talent coming through and I already have my eye on a couple of exciting young players that look great value for a win next season.

As usual, the East Lake County Club in Atlanta, Georgia is the venue for the final field of 30 battling it out to see who can lift the FedEx Cup. The Donald Ross designed East Lake is a stern old test. It’s a 7,319-yard Par 70, which puts it slightly above the PGA Tour average in distance. To add to the pressure off the tee, East Lake also has the narrowest fairways on Tour. The green surface and ankle deep rough are both Bermuda, while the Fairways are Zoysia. In Conclusion, strength in accurate driving and long iron approach shots are most definitely at a premium this week.

*Note. This is a handicapped event with a number of strokes given to the top money earner, Scottie Scheffler, over the rest of the field depending on where they finished in the top 30 money order ranking for the season. The bookies’ odds reflect this.

Blue Horseshoe Loves:

Sam Burns – currently at 20/1 with starsports.bet

With Scheffler starting on -10 it’s going to be a mountain to climb for the chasing pack, but that’s not to say its impossible. I’m looking for guys who are not too far behind him, can handle the distance of this course, and have the ability to get hot and score birdies in bunches. Sam Burns starts on -5. Five shots back across four rounds is more than an achievable bridge to cross as long as he doesn’t let Scheffler get too much further ahead. Burns can get very hot, the length of the course will hold no fears for him and he is one of the best putters on tour this season. I think he is a great shout here.

Cam Smith – currently 22/1 with starsports.bet

Smith starts one shot behind Burns on -4, which makes it even harder for him but if there is one thing we have learned about Cameron Smith over the last couple of years it is that he has an ability to get hot and start rolling them in from all over the place. Smith’s short game suits Donald Ross-designed courses and I think he will be motivated to go out of the PGA Tour being crowned the Tour Champion for 2022.

Rory McIlroy – currently 10/1 with starsports.bet

My final selection this week was going to be Will Zalatoris, but I’m worried that the hip injury which caused him to pull out during the BMW Championship last week will still be bothering him. So, I’ve decided to plump for McIlroy instead because of two reasons; He seems to be most comfortable chasing and his driving and long iron games have been imperious this season. He starts on -4 so it’s all for McIlroy to do. But if he gets hot, he’s most definitely got the game to catch up with the leaders across the four days.
