STAR PREVIEW Thurs: Travelers Championship

Well, if last Sunday’s US Open final round wasn’t an advertisement for the chance to be a part of the storied history of the game over the allure of gimmicks and money, I don’t know what was.

Well done Matthew Fitzpatrick, that bunker shot on eighteen was quite remarkable. I felt sorry for Will Zalatoris, but his time will most definitely come.

This week we stay on the East coast for the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell Connecticut. This par 70 6,841 yard par 70 course, is another one of those short technical layouts that prizes accuracy, shot shaping and ball striking over distance. It’s another Pete Dye design, so sloppy approach shots will be punished!

Blue Horseshoe Loves:

Christian Bezuidenhout – Currently at ? with

The South African has been trending well of late with two top 15 finishes in his last three starts. This course will set up well for his accuracy-based game. I think he could pop up at a very nice price.

Webb Simpson – Currently at ? with

Simpson started well at the US Open last week, but he got the worst of the windy weather conditions in his second round and his high score effectively put him out of the running. This is an altogether easier test and his excellent ball striking game should come into its own here.

Brendon Todd – Currently ? with

Todd’s another player who has been trending well of late. He tied for third at the Charles Schwab and placed thirteenth at the Canadian Open. This short, tight course design is made for his game, and I expect him to thrive here this week.

Lee Hodges – Currently ? with

I selected Lee Hodges at the Canadian Open and he was going very well, sitting in the top 10 on the leader board, until he threw in an awful third round and threw away his chance of a place at a huge price in the process. I’m going to carry on with Lee. He has the game and will come in at any old money at some stage. He just needs to iron out these calamitous rounds, which he should do sooner rather than later.
