STAR PREVIEW: Tottenham Hotspur v Sunderland
[dropcap]N[/dropcap]o surprise to see Spurs trading at short odds for their lunchtime clash against Sunderland on Saturday but the events midweek have put an interesting new perspective on the match.
Tottenham suffered an 1-0 defeat at the hands of fellow title chasers Leicester in their second, but far most important, meeting in the space of 10 days. Sours remain in fourth in the table but a win would have kept them right behind the leaders and it means their recent momentum has come to an end – even if temporarily.
At the opposite end of the table Sunderland grabbed a surprise 4-2 win over 10 men at Swansea and suddenly there’s a glimmer of light at the Stadium of Light with two wins in three matches which have ended a run of five straight defeats. A win here would lift them out of the bottom three and the Sunderland Houdini act will very much be on the cards again.
Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce is clearly wondering whether the Leicester loss will play on the minds of Spurs. He said: “Right when they [Tottenham] needed to be resilient or hold on to the result they got, they didn’t quite do it and that can be because of that lack of experience of what you need to do to win a title. But I think their main aim would be to finish in the Champions League and if the title came around, that would be one of those seasons they dream about.”
