STAR PREVIEW: Tottenham v Newcastle

It took a whole lot of luck, and a helping hand from VAR for Tottenham to take a point from their trip to Manchester City, but they can add another three points to their tally with much less fuss with victory against Newcastle.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men must be the only side – Liverpool apart – that actually enjoy playing against City, given their Champions League victory and last week’s smash and grab, which came thanks to well taken goals from Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura with the only two shots on target Tottenham had.

City won the shot count 30-3 in total, had 13 corners to 2, and won the shots on target count 10-2, but thanks to a late VAR call which ruled out Gabriel Jesus’s goal, had to share the points with Spurs; at the end of the 90 minutes the expected goals tally was an extraordinary 3.22 to 0.22 in City’s favour.

The Lilywhites will be over the moon with that, and they now face a Newcastle side that has struggled this season on home turf. Steve Bruce’s men lost a tight battle against an Arsenal side that needed the outing on the opening day, but they were then ruthlessly exposed by Norwich last week when the Canaries overwhelmed Newcastle.

A Teemu Pukki hat-trick did all the damage but the intricate attacking play of Norwich was too much for them and Tottenham’s forward line will be relishing this task. Spurs can call upon Harry Kane, Erik Lamela, and Lucas Moura whilst in midfield Christen Eriksen and Moussa Sissoko should be able to put their stamp on the game. There might also be a return for Son Heung-min, too.
