Hong Kong Helene didn’t go a yard yesterday, and so disappointing was her performance that even the wide draw in stall 12 can’t be to blame for her poor effort. We go back to Will Rogers Downs tonight for another card in search of a better effort from our selections.

The quality of recent racing here has been higher than the average card at this meet and again we are treated to a ‘Stakes’ race along with a decent allowance contest tonight. The aptly named Will Rogers Stakes (9.15) is the feature event, and in it Southgate might be able to take advantage of a drop in class here. He was sixth in the Texas Turf Mile Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park last time out but had run respectably in the Kip Deville and Remington Springboard Stakes on dirt as a juvenile and is now contesting a £25,000 contest after running in races worth $400,000 and $250,000 to boot and he ought to have a good shout here, with Great Faces and Caney’s Ghost most feared.

In the maiden claiming that follows (9.45), Hoboken can get off the mark for David Cabera and Karl Broberg. His second at Sam Houston Race Park last time has seen four subsequent wins from four different horses, which makes it entirely possible that he ran into a good horse in the shape of Money On My Mind on that day and he has ever chance here.
