STAR PREVIEW Weds: Arsenal v Liverpool

Liverpool travel to Arsenal on Wednesday night knowing that a win would take them to within just one point of league leaders Manchester City in the Premier League table.

Mikel Arteta, under the radar at times, has quietly built something really rather impressive at Arsenal this season. After a horrendous start to the campaign, the Gunners have slowly but surely evolved their playing style and, more importantly, look to be top-four contenders again.

Some smart business in the summer, coupled with some work on the training pitch from Arteta, has seen Arsenal make massive strides this season and – with 12 games left to play – they look to be in pole position to snatch fourth-spot and make their return to the Champions League after a five-year absence.

The Gunners have struggled against Liverpool in recent seasons – winning just one of their last 13 league encounters against the Reds – but will be hoping that this all-new Arsenal will be able to fair slightly better than they have in recent years.

However, they could be without key players in Emile Smith-Rowe and Bukayo Saka, who are both injury doubts coming into this fixture.

This is a simply massive game for Liverpool. After Manchester City’s slip-up against Crystal Palace on Monday night, Jurgen Klopp’s side have been presented with the opportunity to cut the gap at the top to just one point.

Klopp will have been watching closely on Monday night as Pep Guardiola’s side were held to a goalless draw at Selhurst Park and will be hoping that the momentum in the title race is now swinging back into their favour after it had seemed like City had it all wrapped up.

Main man Mohamed Salah – who has been subject to speculation over whether he will be signing a new deal with the Reds this week – will be fit for this game after being a slight injury doubt.

Klopp will be hoping the Egyptian forward – who has scored 28 goals in 35 appearances in all competitions this season – can shut out the noise and produce another one of his big performances.

Arsenal present a tough challenge for Klopp and co here, but Liverpool have been frighteningly consistent in recent weeks and, when the pressure is on, they often deliver and will fancy their chances to snap up the opportunity of closing the gap on City. We’re backing Liverpool to come away with all three points here.
