STAR PREVIEW Weds: Atletico Madrid v Manchester City

Manchester City’s quarter-final with Atletico is finely balanced after the first leg but Manchester City head to Madrid with a crucial advantage and they can reach another Champions League semi-final.

The first leg played out as expected, with City given the task of breaking down Atletico Madrid’s deep lying defence, something they just managed when substitute Phil Foden, produced the game’s moment of magic to unlock Atletico for De Bruyne to score the winner.

The tale of the tape is familiar – City won the shot count 15-0, the corner count 9-0 and had 71% of possession – but with the crucial advantage of the lead, they have the tactical advantage which means Atletico will have to venture forward at some stage in the tie assuming that City can avoid a poor start.

APR 2022 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Manchester City 1-0 Atletico Madrid

City should respect the Atletico attack – they are the third highest scorers in La Liga, Joao Felix had seven goals in his last eight matches before the first leg, and Antoine Griezmann, Luis Suarez, and Yannick Carrasco can all put pressure on the City defence – but when Madrid chase the game that will give City more space than they had at any time last week, and that spells danger for the home side.

Riyad Mahrez (22), Raheem Sterling (14), Kevin De Bruyne (14), Bernardo Silva (10) and Phil Foden (11) all have the ability to unlock any defence – as Foden and De Bryune showed last week – and if City get clear cut chances they are capable of doing the double over Alteti.
