STAR PREVIEW Weds: England Women v Spain Women
After sailing through the group-stage, England now face the knock-out phase of the tournament and will come up against a strong Spain side in the quarter-finals at the Falmer Stadium in Brighton on Wednesday night.
Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman was forced to miss their victory over Northern Ireland in the final match of their group after testing positve for COVID-19 – and it is still unclear whether she will be able to exit isolation for this quarter-final – but winger Lauren Hemp has claimed that the manager still has a ‘massive influence’ on the team.
It didn’t distract them in that Northern Ireland game either. Despite it taking nearly 40 minutes to break down their UK rivals, it was a comfortable night for the Lionesses with goals from Fran Kirby, Beth Mead, Alessia Russio and an own-goal from Kelsie Burrows resulting in a 5-0 win for England.
England have never lost against Spain when facing them in their home country and will be desperate to maintain that record and keep their EURO dream alive when the two teams come together on Wednesday night.

Whilst England eased through their group, Spain were made to work hard for their place in the quarter-finals.
After being rocked by the serious injury to key player Alexia Putellas, Spain started the tournament sluggishly with a 2-0 defeat to Germany meaning they went into their last group game needing a result against Denmark – and a 90th-minute goal being required to guarantee their route into the next round.
After being knocked out of the last two European Championships at the quarter-final stage, Spain may be wondering if they are about to experience deja vu after being drawn against the current starsports.bet tournament favourites England.
We think this could be England’s year and, although this is a tough Spain side despite a stuttering start to the tournament, we expect the Lionesses to make it through. We’re backing them to win in normal time.
