First Race: Prix de Saint-Martial (Maiden) (Unraced 3yo) (Turf) (3yo) (UK Off Time: 10:25am)

A frustrating result for us yesterday as Moujik appeared to need the run in the Prix Birum, flattening out behind King Pacha and National Service (first and second respectively). The winner and second impressed with their attitude as they drew three lengths clear within the final furlong, with the winner’s recent run (had finished well beaten in a Saint-Cloud listed race) possibly proving crucial.

Pentaiade also benefitted from a recent run when taking the Prix Nubienne with a smart turn of foot down the outside to get the better of Black Fever and Vanada. The form should be reasonably useful, and it’s interesting to note Black Fever was the only one of those three (who finished clear of Waahaat) was the only one making her return and she might be best of them.

In the opening Prix Producer, Camogie was a deeply impressive winner who looked as if she could take a high rank – perhaps in graded company – and Japarana was an eyecatching sixth, and goes on the follow list. The Prix Mississipian went the way of Dick Whittington, who ran out a deeply impressive winner and looked very useful – even if a number of contenders were plainly not ready.

Today’s action comes at La Teste De Buch, a racecourse close to Bordeaux in south-western France. The card starts with the Prix de Saint-Martial (10.25, for unraced 3yos) where the notebook should be out once again. After that comes the Prix Triaxe (11.25) a competitive maiden where newcomers Brouillard and Excluvie Baio will be of market interest against those with experience. Of those who have experience, Deauville fourth Alpengeist and Mont-De-Marsan 2nd Ippling made most appeal but that early form is scratchy at best and the race looks trappy.

The market likes those with experience more in the Prix du Haras d’Ayguemorte – Vertigineux (11.55) where Freechope could make it second time lucky. She was second at Deauville on her debut by just a head and whilst that maiden form might not be red hot, if she handles this turf then she’s got stronger claims on paper than La Grenade (dropping down from 10 furlongs to seven), Khara (well beaten favourite on debut at Cagnes-Sur-Mer) and Thread Of Silver (makes first start for HenrI-Alex Pantall after three fair runs for Charlie Appleby last year).

The Prix Nelcius (1.07) features a number of horse who disappointed last time out but Serkiyna is not one of them although perhaps it’s a watching brief too.
