STAR PREVIEW Weds: Manchester United v Tottenham

Manchester United and Tottenham’s clash is the big attraction for Amazon tonight and it could be hard for separate either side at Old Trafford, with the draw making appeal at 5/2.

Manchester United have recovered from a nightmare start to the season with very creditable improvement – since their 4-0 loss at Brentford the only domestic defeat they’ve suffered has come at the hands of Manchester City in a high-octane Derby loss. Erik Ten Hag was powerless to stop City’s brilliance there but United have tightened up noticeably at the back since with Raphael Varane & Lisandro Martinez providing a major improvement on Harry Maguire whilst the addition of Casemiro has also provided some more stability in midfield.

Ten Hag’s ideas are understandably taking time to feed through but United – who have won five of their seven games since that 4-0 defeat back in August – are heading in the right direction, although they’ve found scoring goals quite hard despite Ten Hag having Anthony, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho at his disposal.

Antonio Conte’s Tottenham snatched Champions League football from Arsenal last year and they’ve made an even better start to this Premier League season. After their hard fought 2-0 win over Everton at the weekend (and Manchester City’s loss at Liverpool) they’re level on points with Manchester City and just four behind leaders Arsenal.

They had to be patient to break down Everton, with Conte using a 3-5-2 formation thanks to the absences of Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison, either of whom would ideally make a forward trio with Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son, but they were deserved winners in the end even if Harry Kane’s opening penalty was controversial.

They have the tools to go head-to-head with United, but their away form must be a worry – they have only won two of their seven away matches in all tournaments this season and have just three goals to boast from their last five on the road – and the absence of Kulusevski and Richarlison deals a blow to their counter-attacking prospects.

It’s possible to make a case for all three results – especially given United’s strong home record – but the 5/2 about a draw may be the best value on offer and these two sides should be hard to separate.
